FREEFORMS / MULTIFORMS

A Freeform is a roleplaying game, usually systemless, with 10 or more players and 2 or more GMs.
Freeforms often focus on the social or political interaction of the characters rather than on a plot-line predetermined by the tournament writer. Characters have multiple story threads (often secret) connecting them to other characters. The plot is developed through interactions between characters, with the GMs providing a frame of reference, keeping the intrigues on the boil and sometimes providing simple game mechanics.
Freeforms can be blended with tabletop Roleplaying games to make what is known as Multiforms.

Catch Me, I'm Falling

Writer: Travis Hall, Emily Jackman
System: Systemless
Players: 18

…and release! Tumbling through the air, weightless, she was as close to true flight as anyone could ever hope to achieve. No harness to slow her arc, she reveled in the moment. The air caught the fabric at her shoulders, lightly, and wings made of gossamer webs flared behind her.

Tonight the creak of the rigging would be washed away by the roar of the crowd but that made no difference to her. She never heard anything during these precious seconds of freedom, of untainted joy. The jealousies and petty quarrels, the choices and expectations and boring routines were left behind at the platform.

Then she straightened, reaching for the sure safety of his hands as gravity drew her back into its stern embrace. One heartbeat. Two. By three he'd be there.

Four. Panic turned her words to a scream, leaving her last, desperate plea unvoiced…

A murder mystery for 18 circus artists.

Tales from The City: Via Dolorosa

Writer: Simon Boot, Alicia Cameron
System: a/state
Players: 10

An old and carefully maintained radio crackles, announcing an incoming message before the static clears enough for the words to become audible.

“...patch, Dispatch, do you read? This is Sergeant Hollow of...”

A wave of static drowns the next few words.

“...stage situation at Folly Hills CSB Office has...”

The sound of a gunshot rings out before the ever-present static returns. Heads in the office turn to look at the radio and the officer transcribing what she can hear.

“...Yaumer is down, I repeat, Lieutenant Yaumer is down...”

The sound stays as clear as it ever is, but the words are drowned out by gunshots and screams. The sound suddenly wavers, as though the transmitting radio is being hurriedly moved. One last fragment of the Sergeant's call becomes audible before the static returns and drowns the rest of the transmission.

“...request immediate backup...”

Some minutes later, a field radio in an empty alleyway crackles into static-filled life.

“Sergeant Hollow, this is Dispatch. Captain Micdevitt and CATCH teams 1, 14 and 26 are en route to your location.”
